There are several differences.
First, apps like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini require you to get an expensive subscription (upwards of $200–300/month) to get access to the most cutting-edge AI models and features. We are focused on making these cutting-edge AI models and features available to you from the get-go without a subscription and instead use per-use pricing so that you pay only for what you use.
Second, apps like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini tend to limit how much you can use them; these apps are incentivized to limit your usage and impose restrictive quotas. We want you to use our apps as much as possible (as long as you don’t try to crash our website).
Third, apps like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are limited in what AI models they can offer you. ChatGPT will give you access to only OpenAI’s models. Claude will give you access to only Anthropic’s models. Gemini will give you access to only Google’s models. We, on the other hand, have the flexibility to offer you models from any and all providers.
An AI model is the underlying intelligence that makes our apps work, much like electricity makes your laptop and dishwasher work. We rely on third-party providers for access to these models and integrate them into our apps to let the models do useful work. The app is the scaffold — the body — that allows the model to do useful work. Without the app, the model is mostly just a “brain in a vat”.
You buy credits in advance and use those credits whenever you use a pay-per-use feature of any of the apps that we make available. No need for an expensive subscription. You pay only for what you use.
We are committed to being transparent about pricing. Per-use pricing information can be found in the user interface or in the pricing schedule in our Terms of Service. Rest assured, there are no hidden fees.
Pricing information may be quoted on a tokens basis, per-image basis, per-request basis, or some other basis. A “token” is a unit of measurement for input and output data. For English-language text, one word is approximately 4 tokens. One image is approximately 1,000 tokens. One PDF page is approximately 500 tokens. One second of audio is approximately 30 tokens. One second of video is approximately 250 tokens. We rely on third-party model providers to calculate tokens; each model provider may calculate tokens differently.
